The Blowing Rock claims to be the oldest tourist attraction in North Carolina, and indeed it is easy to understand why this beautiful, bizarre natural formation has attracted so much attention. Towering 3,000 feet over Johns River Gorge, winds sweep down the path of the gorge and up Blowing Rock, causing small objects like snow to fly upwards against the pull of gravity. The rock has another aspect: a romantic legend of a Cherokee warrior who fell in love with a woman of a different tribe but was called away, only to be returned to her days later by the winds flowing up the rock face. While this may be only an ancient story, it has helped secure the rock's reputation as a romantic spot for lovers to visit as well as simply a lovely scenic destination. It sits just a short drive south of the town of Blowing Rock in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
